Crawford Explodes At WBC After Losing Belt Over $300K Fee

Terence Crawford blew his top today, trashing the WBC for stripping him of his super middleweight title after he failed to pay the $300,000 sanctioning fee from the $50 million that he was paid for his fight on September 13th against Canelo Alvarez.

Crawford Loses It

Sounding like he was carrying a chip on his shoulder, a venom-spitting Crawford devalued the stripped WBC title, saying it was a mere “trophy” that doesn’t mean anything. For a title that he says didn’t mean anything, Crawford looked like he was apoplectic.

Terence says WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman should have taken what he was willing to pay for sanctioning the $300K fee they were asking for. They reportedly lowered it from 3% to 0.6% previously, but he still didn’t pay.

Fee Math Crawford Hated

“You said, allegedly, I made X amount of money. You don’t know how much I made. You don’t know how much I made. You speculate,” said Terence Crawford in his bitter rant today on social media. “Mauricio (Sulaiman), everyone in the world knows you were going for Canelo, and you were mad I beat Canelo.”

It’s been reported that Turki Alalshikh paid Crawford $50 million for the fight. If that’s the number the WBC is going on by calculating the sanctioning fee, it’s understandable. If Crawford wanted to show them precisely how much he made, maybe he would have gotten a reduced sanctioning fee. Of course, if the $50M is accurate, he can’t say much.

“If you were a real fan of the sport, you’d say congratulations instead of having that smirk on your face, all mad and pouting. You should have taken the money,” said Crawford about what he was willing to give the WBC for the sanctioning fee instead of the $300.0000 from the $50 million.

Special Treatment?

Why should the WBC give special rules for Crawford over anyone else when tabulating their sanctioning fees? Does he feel entitled and given special treatment that the average fighter shouldn’t? Crawford was already allowed to skip the line to fight Canelo Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight title without ever competing in the 168-lb division.

168’s Forgotten Contenders

How fair was that for the contenders waiting in line for their shot at the super middleweight titles against Canelo? Would it have been too much to ask for Turki Alalshikh to have insisted that Terence earn his shot at Canelo by running this gauntlet at 168?
